Feliz Cinco De Mayo, Mis Amigos!
Why Do We Celebrate This Mexican Holiday?
There is so much more to this holiday that guacamole and tequila, so while you sip on your margarita and listen to the mariachi band in the background, let me tell you a little history to why today is celebrated.
In the late 1850’s the Mexican Treasury was left almost bankrupt in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War and the Reform War. In 1861 Spain, France and Great Britain invaded Mexico demanding reimbursement from Mexican President, Benito Juárez, who stated all foreign debt payments would be suspended for two years…seems a little OTT but I guess that’s politics!
Spain and Great Britain came to an agreement with Mexico and withdrew their Army. However, with the U.S. Civil War taking place North of the Mexican Boarder, France decided to take action towards establishing a Latin empire in Mexico that would favor French interests.
But Mexico was not ready to give up their country! On May 5th 1862 the small Mexican Army defeated the French who had a stronger more equipped Army, which was about twice the size, in El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (The Day of the Battle of Puebla). And their flag continues to stand strong today!
Therefore, today we celebrate Mexico’s defeat over France and remember, sometimes heart and soul count for more than strength in numbers. Or simply put – DON’T MESS WITH MEXICO!…Just enjoy their guacamole and tequila!
