More and more we hear about how to help the environment, about products that are now eco-friendly, and how big name designers are creating eco-friendly collections. There are lots of websites, blogs, etc. informing us how to live sustainably and environmentally responsible. One of my go to sites is EcoSalon. In my opinion this is all great – whatever can be done to make our world a better place, I’m all for it!
When I was thinking about starting the showroom, I originally thought about creating a showroom for only eco-friendly products, accessories, etc. However, the more I thought about it, the more I questioned what it meant to be eco-friendly. The actual definition of Eco-Friendly is simply, “not harmful to the environment”. That can mean a lot, especially when we’re talking about manufacturing.
I then looked into how emerging designers manufacture their product and found out that actually, the smaller the production, the more eco-friendly it is. As emerging designers are limited financially, they are often the ones manufacturing the product themselves. They manufacture locally, either by choice or by necessity, which creates / keeps jobs in the U.S. and reduces carbon footprints. Therefore, it was decided that the focus of the showroom would be on Emerging Designers who, for the most part, hand fabricate their work.
A few of the lines at the showroom are going one step further and they’re using recycled, sustainable and/or organic materials. For jewelry, that’s not too difficult. If the designers don’t fabricate their work themselves, it’s more often than not handmade by a small group of bench jewelers or by a hand casting process. This process itself is eco-friendly as the metals used are generally recycled and melted down from scrap metal taken from creating the designs.
The scarf line, Beau Monde Organics, is 100% Organic, from the cotton used to make the scarves, to the dyes and printing process used for the beautiful designs.
I’ve included a few pictures from the jewelry designers represented in the showroom. They are all conscious about being Handmade, Eco-Friendly or Sustainable – or all at the same time!
